Alors que dans le jointage longitudinal les placages passent dans la jointeuse suivant le fil du bois, dans le «jointage transversal» cette avance est perpendiculaire à ce même fil. On obtient ainsi un ruban continu que l'on débite à la largeur voulue grâce à un massicot placé à la sortie de la machine. C'est aux États-Unis qu'a été réalisée la première machine à jointage transversal [...] Les placages aux chants dressés et encollés sont poussés l'un contre l'autre et avancent transversalement en passant sur un tambour métallique de 2 m de diamètre, chauffé intérieurement, contre lequel ils sont maintenus au moyen de câbles souples.
