D'après l'A.P.A.V.E. (Association des propriétaires d'appareils à vapeur électriques), organisme officiellement chargé, pour la France, du contrôle technique et de l'homologation de ce genre d'appareils, on désigne, en français, par "machine à laver électrique sous pression" ce qui s'appelle en anglais "electric pressure washer". Il s'agit d'une machine qui fonctionne, comme un autoclave, à environ 120°C et 2 atm. et qui assure ainsi la stérilisation du linge. Elle est surtout employée dans les hôpitaux et les établissements à caractère hospitalier (maisons de repos, etc.) (Jean-Pierre Brousse, OCDE, Paris).
