The so-called "soft-flow" machines use the same transport tube principle as overflow machines where the fabric is transported in a stream of dye liquor. However, while in overflow machines the reel is not motor driven, in soft-flow equipment the reel and the jet work in constant harmony to remove the fabric from the front of the storage area, expose it briefly to a high concentration of liquor within the transport tube, then return it to the rear of the vessel. The soft flow machines are more gentle on the fabric than conventional jet overflow machines.

Dans les machines dites «soft-flow», le principe de la tournette est le même que celui des machines [de] type overflow où l’étoffe est transportée dans un flux de bain de teinture. Toutefois, alors que dans les machines overflow la tournette n'est pas entraînée par un moteur, dans la machine type «soft-flow» la tournette et le jet fonctionnent constamment de façon synchrone pour entraîner l’étoffe de l'avant de la zone de dépôt, la mettre en contact brièvement avec une forte concentration du bain à l'intérieur de la tuyère et la ramener ensuite vers l'arrière de la cuve. Les machines «soft-flow» transportent l'étoffe plus en douceur que les overflow classiques.
