La Fundación del Español Urgente (Fundéu BBVA), con el asesoramiento de la Real Academia Española, indica que la palabra "insignia", aplicada originalmente al buque que comanda una escuadra, ha pasado a aplicarse de modo figurado para aludir a un elemento muy representativo y distintivo de una serie de personas, objetos, etc. Con este sentido lo normal es que se emplee en aposición, y en tal caso se mantiene invariable: "las tiendas insignia".
