The Overhauser Magnetometer (OVM) was developed and manufactured under contract by LETI (Laboratoire d'Electronique de Technologie et d'Instrumentation) at Grenoble. It serves as the magnetic field standard for the CHAMP mission. The purpose of this scalar magnetometer is to provide an absolute in-flight calibration capability for the FGM vector magnetic field measurements.

De nombreux domaines de la géophysique bénéficient de l'apport des données spatiales et en particulier, l'étude des champs magnétiques et de gravité de la Terre, la tectonique et plus généralement toutes les disciplines qui réclament la mesure et/ou la cartographie des déplacements locaux, régionaux ou globaux. Concernant l'étude du champ magnétique, la France a contribué à la mission danoise Œsted qui a été lancée en février 1999, par la fourniture d'un magnétomètre scalaire.
