En pratique, le domaine sur lequel l’équation d’état du réacteur est définie et bornée est subdivisé spatialement en un ensemble de régions dites mailles (ou points de calcul) dans lesquelles l’équation est intégrée spatialement. Ce procédé, appelé discrétisation, permet de passer d’un problème aux dérivées partielles (dont la solution analytique n’existe pas pour un réacteur réel) à un problème numérique.
