The spine characteristic of secondary hyperparathyroidism due to renal failure, in which thick bands of increased density (osteosclerosis) adjacent to the superior and inferior margins of vertebral bodies produce a horizontal-striped appearance, similar to the design on shirts worn by rugby players.
