A band and loop maintainer is made of stainless steel wire. The maintainer is held in place by an orthodontic-type band around an adjacent tooth or [around] a crown on the tooth. A wire loop attached to the band ... extends into the space and touches the tooth on the other side of the space to hold both teeth in place.

The distal shoe space maintainer is a fixed appliance used when a second primary molar is lost or extracted before the first permanent molar erupts. This very premature loss leaves no tooth for the wire arm of a band and loop maintainer to touch. Therefore, the guiding plane of the metal arm is instead inserted under the gum against the unerupted first permanent molar.

Cet appareil unilatéral fixe se place sur un segment de l'arcade dentaire lorsqu'une dent de lait est tombée prématurément, afin d'empêcher les dents adjacentes de migrer dans l'espace nouvellement formé, ce qui nuirait à la dent permanente sous-jacente lors de son éruption. Si une des deux dents de part et autre de l'espace est très endommagée, l'orthodontiste peut opter pour un mainteneur d'espace de type couronne et boucle. Le cas échéant, il pose une couronne en acier inoxydable sur la dent endommagée. Il soude ensuite les extrémités d'un fil en acier inoxydable sur les côtés lingual et buccal de la couronne. Le fil forme ainsi une boucle dont l'extrémité s'appuie sur la dent saine de l'autre côté de l'espace à maintenir.
