Il s'agit d'une maison mobile, mais avec des aspects différents de la maison mobile traditionnelle, p. ex. des normes de construction plus élevées, charpente en bois (et non en acier), prix plus élevé, apparence d'une petite maison (toit, fondation périphérique, revêtement en vinyle (et non en tôle). Ce terme a été proposé par un terminologue du service SVP. Le terme "mini-home" semble être restreint à la région atlantique puisqu'il est inconnu de la SCHL à Ottawa. Selon le terminologue, il faudrait éviter d'utiliser "mini-maison", qui serait un calque.
