Pour chaque hybride commercialisé, la maison de semences publie un indice de maturité qui indique le nombre théorique d'unités thermiques maïs (U.T.M.) requises pour atteindre la maturité physiologique. Le CPVQ publie quant à lui une carte tout aussi théorique du nombre d'U.T.M. disponibles dans les régions agricoles du Québec. Puisque la réalité dépasse souvent la fiction et la théorie, il faut utiliser ces données avec prudence et discernement et éviter de s'en servir comme d'un crédo infaillible. Selon le système actuel de mise en marché des hybrides de maïs, la maison de semences concernée détermine seule la cote de maturité qui sera assignée à un nouvel hybride. La méthode utilisée variera selon le personnel disponible et les exigences commerciales du service de mise en marché.

Une fois qu'il existe suffisamment de semences «fondation», «enregistrées», et «certifiées», la variété est offerte aux agriculteurs par des marchands grainiers et sert à la production commerciale.
