Les Français [...] ont une espérance de vie à la naissance de 78 ans. Cependant, malgré ces bons résultats, on constate que certains meurent trop jeunes. La mortalité prématurée en France est importante (il s’agit du taux de mortalité spécifique rapporté à la part de la population dont l’âge est inférieur à 65 ans). Ce taux est paradoxalement un des plus élevé d’Europe. Ceci s’explique en partie par la fréquence des maladies liées aux habitudes de vie et aux comportements individuels à risques : tabac, alcool, accidents de circulation, sida, suicides… et par la faible place accordée à la prévention dans les politiques de santé.
