To date, nivalenol-producing isolates of Fusarium graminearum have been observed, on rice and other cereals, only in Japan and have been associated with the occurrence of red mould disease "Akakabi-byo". Symptoms include anorexia, nausea, vomiting, headache, abdominal pain, diarrhea and convulsions.
