DEF

The staining of the edges of a book or the surface of paper to give it the appearance of marble. The colours are floated on a solution composed of gum tragacanth or carrageen, boiled in water, mixed with ox gall and poured into a flat tray. The edges of the book are treated with a solution of concentrated alum, before they are tipped against the surface of the marbling solution.

OBS

The concept coined by the English term "marbling" is more general than that designated by the French terms "marbrure" and "jaspure" since, in English, no distinction is made between the marbling of a whole sheet of paper and the marbling of edges.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Façonnage, pliage et reliure (Imprimerie)
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Plant Diseases
CONT

Peanut mottle virus (PMV) was first discovered as the causal agent of a mottle disease of peanut in 1961. Since then, the virus has occurred in all major peanut-producing areas of the world... A mild mottle is caused by the mottle virus (PMV) on the youngest peanut leaves (Plates 80). The light and dark green areas can be observed most easily by transmitted light. Frequently, leaflet margins curl upward, causing a cupping appearance.

OBS

PMV is a member of the potyvirus group whose origins are unknown, but its widespread distribution is probably the result of seed transmission and symptoms that are frequently undetected.
