L'International Monetary Market avait été créé le 16 mai 1972, en tant qu'entité indépendante, par le Chicago Mercantile Exchange afin de négocier les premiers contrats à terme de devises qui venaient d'être créés : livre sterling, dollar canadien, mark allemand, florin, franc français, peso américain, yen japonais et franc suisse.
