La masse atmosphérique équivalente est comptée en prenant pour unité l'épaisseur verticale (AM1) d'une atmosphère dans des conditions normales de température et de pression soit 0 °C. Si l'on néglige les effets de la courbure terrestre et de la réfraction atmosphérique, la masse atmosphérique équivalente est simplement la longueur du trajet des rayons solaires dans une couche d'air homogène et uniforme d'épaisseur unité. On a alors: AM = AO/sin h où h est la hauteur du soleil. Hors atmosphère, la masse atmosphérique équivalente est évidemment nulle. On la désigne par AMO. Pour h = 30°, la masse atmosphérique équivalente est égale à 2. On la note AM2.
