CONT

Calandria, Dump Port and Dump Tank Spray Cooling (Pickering A only). Figure 13.3 shows calandria spray nozzles that cool the exposed calandria, calandria tubes and guide tubes. The figure shows similar sprays for the dump port and dump tank. The sprays operate continuously, both when the moderator is in the calandria and when it is in the dump tank.

CONT

DEF

An energy-absorbing system employing water to limit the value and duration of overpressure within the reactor building following an unintentional loss of coolant.

CONT

Inside the building housing a reactor which is undergoing a major nuclear accident, internal steam pressure can be greatly reduced by using a dousing system to condense the steam. All CANDU reactors are provided with such a dousing system. It is much more difficult to reduce the pressure from non-condensable gases which are formed in great quantities during meltdown.

CONT

The Containment System forms a continuous, pressure-confining envelope around the reactor core and primary heat-transport system. In the CANDU 6 design it consists of a pre-stressed, post-tensioned concrete structure, an automatically-initiated dousing system, building coolers, and a filtered air discharge system. In Ontario Hydro's multi-reactor designs, containment includes a vacuum building connected to all reactor vaults in the plant, with its own dousing system for reducing internal pressure.
