A compound that can be shaped by a moulding process.

CONT

Combinations of resins, fillers and reinforcement in a form suitable for processing by injection, transfer and compression are called moulding compounds. The materials may be granular, powders, sheets or doughs, according to both the constraints of manufacture and the intended application. Compounds based on thermoplastics resins are generally either granules or powders, while the form of those based on thermosetting resins is resin-specific.

Any of several pastes that harden upon exposure to the air; used for cast or sculpted bas-relief ornament; types include mixtures of linseed or fish oil with whiting and animal-hide glue, or wood fibers and glue, or papier-maché, or plaster; used since the 17c and very common beginning in the 1890s.

Par exemple, dans l'ouvrage de Jean-Michel André intitulé «Restauration des sculptures», on parle des «pâtes» de verre (p. 116) et de la «pâte» Araldite qui, durcie après mélange de deux éléments, reste légèrement souple et peut se travailler comme un bois tendre et être utilisée pour le remplacement des manques dans la réparation des objets du bois (p. 79).

Le SMC est constitué de résines polyesters, parfois phénoliques, de fibres de verre coupées à partir de roving à 25 ou 50 mm avec éventuellement des fibres continues orientées, de charges minérales et de différents adjuvants, colorants, catalyseurs de durcissement, agents antiretrait au moulage ou encore additifs améliorant le comportement au feu. L'ensemble est fabriqué et conservé entre deux pellicules de polyéthylène. Une machine à couper le verre et à enduction dotée d'organes de contrôle très précis assure une production de qualité constante.
