Au Japon, les chiens d'aveugle sont très rares. Cela a donné l'idée au Japonais Susumu Tachi, dès 1975, d'inventer un robot pour aider les aveugles à se déplacer. En 1977, il produisait le premier robot guide expérimental, MARK I, et en 1983, naissait MELDOG MARK IV, capable de réaliser les mêmes fonctions que celles d'un chien d'aveugle.
