Merit Canada was established in November 2008 as a united national voice for eight different provincial open shop construction associations. Merit Canada is federally incorporated under the Canada Corporations Act. It succeeds the Canadian Coalition of Open Shop Construction Associations which [was] formed in 1999 to challenge the constitutionality of a compulsory union membership requirement to work in Quebec's construction industry.

UNU-MERIT is a research and training centre of United Nations University (UNU). UNU is an international community of scholars engaged in research, postgraduate training and the dissemination of knowledge aimed at resolving the pressing global problems of human survival, development and welfare. UNU-MERIT's research mission is to provide more insights into the social, political and economic international and local context within which innovation and technological change is created, adapted, selected, diffused, and improved upon. Un nouveau centre de recherche et de formation de l'Université des Nations Unies pour l'innovation, la technologie et le développement est né officiellement le 1er janvier 2006. Ce nouveau centre, dont le nom est UNU-MERIT (Centre de Recherche Economique et Sociale et de Formation de Maastricht pour l'Innovation et la Technologie) est le résultat d'un accord de coopération entre l'UNU et l'Université de Maastricht. L'inauguration de l UNU-MERIT fait suite à une période transitoire d'un an, durant laquelle les deux universités ont décidé de la manière d'intégrer leurs instituts de recherche respectifs l'Institut pour les Nouvelles Technologies de l'UNU (UNU-INTECH) et le MERIT. Le principal but de la fusion de ces deux instituts basés à Maastricht était de mettre en commun leurs ressources intellectuelles et de réaliser des synergies dans le contenu de leurs recherches et leur organisation. L'UNU-MERIT s'attachera à atteindre trois objectifs primordiaux : devenir un centre de recherche de classe internationale d'excellence académique attirant les meilleurs chercheurs de par le monde; devenir un centre de recherche essentiel en matière de politiques de la connaissance à un niveau global, national, et régional dans les pays en développement aussi bien que dans les pays développés; devenir un centre de formation international universitaire et politique, proposant des formations et la supervision de doctorats aussi bien qu'un centre de formation politique pour les étudiants et les fonctionnaires des pays en développement et des pays développés.
