English

Subject field(s)
  • Erosion and Weathering (Geol.)
  • Geochemistry
CONT

Banks et al. (1992a, 1994) considered both a deep weathering process and hydrothermal alteration to explain the observed clay alteration, but favoured hydrothermal fluids originating from the Permian Oslo Rift and its associated volcanism as the alteration agent.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Erosion and Weathering (Geol.)
  • Geochemistry
DEF

The destructive processes by which rocks are changed on exposure to atmospheric agents at or near the earth's surface, with little or no transport of the loosened or altered material ...

CONT

Weathering is the initial stage in the process of denudation. An essential feature of the process is that it affects rocks in situ; no transportation is involved. This is the factor which distinguishes it clearly from erosion. There are two main types of weathering: (1) Mechanical. ... (2) Chemical ...

Domaine(s)
  • Érosion et corrosion (Géologie)
  • Géochimie
DEF

Record 3 2009-08-12

English

Subject field(s)
  • Speleology
  • Erosion and Weathering (Geol.)
CONT

The Temala Limestone is a porous rock prone to solution by weakly acidic water such as groundwater and rainfall. These waters circulate trough cracks and pores within the limestone aiding the carbonic acids in these waters to remove the calcium carbonate from the limestone by solution. This process is known as karst weathering.

CONT

The limestone in the region has been impacted by karstic weathering processes. The rate of precipitation had a direct impact on corroding developments.

OBS

Toutes les roches à la surface de la Terre s'altèrent et se désagrègent lentement. Les conditions météorologiques érodent les roches. Ce phénomène s'appelle la météorisation. Les roches sont érodées par des agents physiques et chimiques.

Subject field(s)

DEF

Succession of layers in unconsolidated surface material produced by prolonged weathering.

Since manganese is more mobile than iron the problem arises as to why manganese is retained in the weathering profile.

Subject field(s)
  • Erosion and Weathering (Geol.)
  • Geochemistry
DEF

The process of weathering by which chemical reactions (hydrolysis, hydration, oxidation, carbonation, ion exchange, and solution) transform rocks and minerals into new chemical combinations that are stable under conditions prevailing at or near the Earth's surface ...

CONT

Mechanical and chemical weathering are usually inseparable, but under different climatic conditions, one or other may predominate. The solution of vast amounts of limestone by carbon-dioxide-charged ground water percolating through cracks and crevices to produce extensive cave systems is an example where chemical weathering predominates.

CONT

The results of chemical weathering are frequently new substances of reduced particle size, greater plasticity, lower density, and increased volume, compared with the original materials.

CONT

Sometimes the material left behind has been sufficiently concentrated by weathering processes and ground water action to form residual ore deposits. For the formation of extensive deposits, intense chemical weathering such as in tropical climates having a high rainfall, is necessary.

OBS

The term "chemical alteration" is a more general term.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Érosion et corrosion (Géologie)
  • Géochimie
CONT

L'altération chimique météorique a pu être préparée en profondeur, à forte température, par une circulation hydrothermale. On rencontre ainsi des zones préaltérées, littéralement pourries.
