... a backstrap loom is characterised by a strap fixed to one end of the loom which the weaver wears around their waist, while the other end of the loom has individual straps that allow it to be anchored to a railing or pole, making the device portable. On appelle «métier à ceinture» un métier à tisser de petites dimensions, très simple dans sa conception et sa mise en œuvre. Celui-ci est doté d'une ensouple solidarisée par une ceinture au dos de l'artisan qui ajuste la tension des fils de chaîne en s'inclinant plus ou moins. Ce dernier travaille à genoux ou assis, et glisse une navette de trame (souvent une simple baguette de bois) entre les fils de chaîne [...] Le tissu se forme ainsi devant le tisserand en «montant».
