Dichos caracteres son legibles, no sólo por la máquina, sino también por el hombre y pueden consistir en dígitos, letras u otros símbolos. La tinta contiene una substancia magnética que se magnetiza al insertarse el documento en la máquina permitiendo que cada carácter sea detectado por las cabezas de lectura. Para que la máquina reconozca y codifique los caracteres, éstos deben tener forma y tamaño apropiados y una alta calidad de impresión.
