Outlast was developed for NASA and is consistently used in maier sports jackets as the material with automatic air-conditioning. Millions of microscopic PCM (phase change material) capsules store warmth during body activity and distribute them in the rest period. They thus ensure reliable temperature management and prevent large temperature fluctuations in the clothing, even when activity levels or the outside temperature vary. 4, record 1, English, - phase%2Dchange%20microcapsule
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 OBS
When the encapsulated PCM [phase change material] is heated to the melting point, it absorbs heat energy as it goes from a solid state to a liquid state. This phase change produces a temporary cooling effect in the clothing layers ... The heat energy may come from the body (e.g. when the wearer first dons the garment) or from a warm environment. Once the PCM has completely melted, the storage of heat stops. If the PCM garment is worn in a cold environment where the temperature is below the PCM's freezing point, and the fabric temperature drops below this transition temperature, the micro-encapsulated liquid PCM will change back to a solid state, generating heat energy and a temporary warming effect ... The developers claim that this heat exchange produces a buffering effect in clothing, minimizing changes in skin temperature and prolonging the thermal comfort of the wearer. 5, record 1, English, - phase%2Dchange%20microcapsule

4, record 1, French, - microcapsule%20%C3%A0%20changement%20de%20phase

Enzymes can be immobilized within microcapsules that have either a permanent or nonpermanent semipermeable membrane.... Nonpermanent membranes or "liquid-surfactant membranes" ... refer to a water-immiscible phase composed of surfactants, "additives", and a hydrocarbon solvent that contain emulsion-size aqueous droplets of various reagents or catalysts.... The general procedure for immobilizing enzymes with liquid-surfactants membranes microcapsules is similar to that used for microencapsulation with permanent membranes. The aqueous enzyme-containing solution is emulsified with a surfactant to form the liquid membrane encapsulated enzyme. Once prepared, the microcapsules are transferred to an aqueous solution to which then can be added the substrate. 2, record 2, English, - liquid%2Dsurfactant%20membrane%20microcapsule

Over the past decade, several methods for microencapsulating islets have been investigated. Microcapsules offer a number of distinct advantages over the use of other encapsulation devices, including (1) greater surface to volume ratio, (2) ease of implantation, and (3) retrievability by lavage and needle aspiration. Most of the procedures for fabricating microspheres involve extruding a mixture of cells and sodium alginate using a droplet generation device into a CaCl2 solution. The negatively charged gelled droplets can then be coated with positively charged poly L-lysine (PLL). 3, record 4, English, - microcapsule
