A collection of facts stored and retrieved as a single unit. The limitations of working memory are usually defined in terms of the number of chunks that can be handled simultaneously.

Memory consists of clusters of symbols called "chunks". A chunk is a symbol associated with a set of patterns or stimuli, chunks are hierarchized collections of still smaller chunks. In this conception, memory is a vast network of chunks. Learning and remembering occur as linkages between chunks are established and revised.

... chunks relate patterns of goal parameters to patterns of goal results. Each chunk improves the performance of the system by eliminating the need to process fully a specific instance.

A unit of knowledge including pedagogical issues around which the architecture of a tutoring system is organized. Each bite is itself a miniature system focused on a specific piece of the subject matter. In addition to some domain knowledge, it includes: 1) knowledge about its conceptual relations to other bites, such as part/whole, class/subclass, or analogical relations; 2) knowledge about its curricular relations to other bites, such as pre- and postrequisites, so that it can trigger remedial actions; 3) indication about the student's mastery of its part of the subject matter (a miniature student model, which in conjunction with other bites forms a type of overlay); 4) the ability to diagnose the student's use and disuse of this knowledge by taking the blame for suboptimal actions; 5) the ability to generate problems that involve the use of this knowledge; 6) the ability to generate instructional interventions related to this knowledge.

The system can become more directive and suggest experiments according to a curriculum that organizes the domain bites. Bites for investigative behaviors monitor various skills of scientific inquiry such as the ability to collect and record data in a systematic way. At this level, the system acts as a coach, but it does not address inquiry skills directly, since these bites constitute a sort of metacurriculum. Instead, it advises the student in her investigation of the domain, employing different levels of hints as in WEST.
