En médecine, par exemple, il serait concevable de produire des pilules qui, grâce à un micromoteur seraient capables de libérer tel ou tel médicament dans l'organisme lorsque le besoin s'en ferait sentir au niveau de capteurs spécialisés. Ou encore, des microforeuses pourraient être utilisées pour déboucher des artères malades. Et pourquoi ne pas utiliser des microventilateurs en microélectronique même, pour refroidir les circuits qui, on le sait, ont une fâcheuse tendance à s'échauffer? Plus généralement, les micromachines pourraient servir à effectuer toutes sortes de micromanipulations délicates, aussi bien au laboratoire, que dans l'industrie. Cependant, l'obstacle le plus immédiat, réside dans le fait de produire ce type d'engins en grande séries. Or l'industrie micro-électronique n'est pas encore vraiment prête. Alors que les «puces» électronique sont des objets extrêmement minces, la fabrication de micro-moteurs impose en effet que l'on sache obtenir des objets tridimensionnels. Gageons que cette difficulté ne sera que passagère.
