MICRORAFALE [5 records]

Record 1 2023-01-31

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric Physics
DEF

A microburst accompanied by heavy precipitation at the surface.

CONT

A rain foot may be a visible sign of a wet microburst.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Physique de l'atmosphère
CONT

Record 2 2004-01-28

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric Physics
DEF

Downburst with a small lateral extent, about 1 to 4 km, and lasting only a short time.

CONT

The microburst has a strong downflow descending very close to the ground. The ground turns the vertical winds into horizontal winds. The maximum horizontal extent of a microburst is on the order of 4 km in diameter but can be less than 1 km in diameter. Despite this small scale, an intense microburst can induce horizontal wind radials as high as 160 km/h.

OBS

microburst: term officially approved by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

French

Domaine(s)
  • Physique de l'atmosphère
DEF

CONT

Microbursts result as a strong downflow bursts from a parent cloud and strike the Earth's surface at an angle (usually) off-the-vertical. The air striking the Earth flows out from the centre (called an "outflow") at speeds which depend on the downflow speed and striking angle. As the outflowing air undercuts the surface air, a vertical roll begins to develop that eventually encircles the downflow centre as a horizontal vortex ring.

CONT

Figure 7.5.10. Outflow microbursts are the most commonly observed type of microbursts. Some rotor microbursts develop inside macrobursts behind their gust fronts.

CONT

Figure 7.5.10 illustrates the general circulation for the outflow microburst where the downflow is completely encircled by the horizontal vortex; and the rotor microburst which does not form a continuous circular horizontal vortex, or may be part of a macroburst or a break-away from a ring vortex.
