The Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM). The functional part of an STM consists of a metal tip, often tungsten, mounted on a piezoelectric tripod to allow motion in three dimensions. The tip, which is extremely sharp (ideally terminating in a single atom) is brought to within a few angstroms of a conducting sample surface.

Le microscope à effet tunnel permet en général d'atteindre la résolution atomique sur des surfaces de métaux ou de semi-conducteurs. Une telle résolution demeure, par contre, exceptionnelle sur des matériaux plus «mous» tels que des polymères ou des objets d'intérêt biologique, pour lesquels d'ailleurs les mécanismes de conduction locale ne sont pas bien compris.

El microscopio de efecto túnel es un instrumento de gran importancia para el análisis superficial de materiales metálicos y semiconductores, esto debido a que fue el primer método de microscopía capaz de obtener resolución atómica de superficies, abriendo por tanto una nueva era para la microscopía en general.

A grandes rasgos, el principio [...] es muy simple: consiste en colocar con mucha precisión una punta afilada a muy poca distancia de la muestra, del orden de 0,5 nm, y medir en cada caso una magnitud física fuertemente dependiente de la distancia entre ambos, que en el caso del STM es la corriente túnel que circula entre punta y muestra.
