One billionth of a metre.

CONT

A nanometer (nm) is 1,000 times smaller than a micrometer. It is equal to 1/1,000,000,000th or one-billionth of a meter. When things are this small, you can't see them with your eyes, or a light microscope. Objects this small require a special tool called a scanning probe microscope ... Atoms are smaller than a nanometer. One atom measures ~0.1-0.3 nm, depending on the element.

[According to the International System of Units (SI)], compound prefix names or symbols, that is, prefix names or symbols formed by the juxtaposition of two or more prefix names or symbols, are not permitted. Example: nm (nanometer) but not mμm (millimicrometer).

Le nanomètre (nm) correspond à un milliardième de mètre. L’échelle nano est celle de l’atome et des molécules : un atome d’hydrogène a un diamètre de 0,1 nm, et une molécule d’ADN, une longueur d’environ 2,5 nm [...] Les nanosciences étudient les phénomènes et la manipulation des matériaux à l’échelle dunanomètre. Par nanotechnologies, on entend la conception, la production et l’exploitation de structures et d’appareils d’une taille comprise entre 0,1 et 100 nanomètres.

1 millimètre (mm) [...] = 1 million de nanomètres = 10 millions d'angströms; 1 micron = 1,000 nanomètres (nm) = 10,000 angströms; 1 nanomètre = 10 angstroms.

[Dans le système international d'unités (SI)], les symboles de préfixes composés, c’est-à-dire les symboles de préfixes formés par juxtaposition de deux ou plusieurs symboles de préfixes, sont interdits. Cette règle s’applique aussi aux noms de préfixes composés. Exemple : nm (nanometre)mais pas mμm (millimicrometre).
