La monoclonalité est un élément diagnostic en faveur de la nature cancéreuse d'une prolifération cellulaire. Elle peut être mise en évidence par immunohistochimie au niveau des cellules plasmocytaires : une tumeur à différenciation plasmocytaire exprimant une seule chaîne légère d'immunoglobuline (kappa ou lambda) est maligne. La monoclonalité peut également être mise en évidence par des techniques de biologie moléculaire utiles pour le diagnostic de certains lymphomes.
