MONOFILAMENT [10 records]

Record 1 2022-07-24

English

Subject field(s)

  • Thread Spinning (Textiles)
CONT

Several thread suppliers sell spools of monofilament thread, which is very fine and comes in either nylon or polyester. Many quilters prefer polyester monofilament thread because it doesn't stretch as much as the nylon, and therefore isn't as likely to tangle. In addition, nylon thread doesn't do well in heat and it may discolor over time. Still, other quilters choose nylon [invisible] thread for its performance and say it looks the most like hand quilting.

OBS

thread: Although this designation only technically applies to yarns produced for sewing or other needlework, it is often used to designate knitting and weaving yarn.

Key term(s)

CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Thread Spinning (Textiles)
DEF

A single filament that is strong enough to function as a yarn in commercial textile operations or as an entity in other applications.

CONT

The apparel applications of monofilaments are limited owing to their low bulk and high bending rigidity. The examples of monofilaments from everyday life include fishing line, dental floss, in sports rackets, and bristles of tooth brushes. Hollow monofilaments are used in softer sewing thread applications ...

OBS

monofilament: designation and definition standardized by ISO.

OBS

monofilament yarn: designation reproduced with the authorization of AFNOR.

French

Domaine(s)

DEF

OBS

Woven geotextiles are composed of two perpendicular sets of parallel filaments, tapes or yarns systematically interlaced to form a planar structure. Some woven geotextiles are calendered, which consists of pressing the fabric between heated rollers. Yarns are thus softened and deformed at their crossover point and, as a result, are somewhat mechanically interlocked.

OBS

... a geotextile is any permeable textile material used with foundation, soil, rock, earth, or any geotechnical engineering-related material, that is an integral part of a man-made project, structure or system.

OBS

Monofilament woven: The woven fabric produced with monofilament yarns.

OBS

Monofilament: A single large filament from manmade fibers such as acetate, rayon, nylon, polyester, acrylic, et al.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Textiles techniques

  • Mécanique des sols
CONT
