Subject field(s)
  • Scientific Instruments
  • Optics
  • Biophysics
  • Molecular Biology
CONT

By using a fluorescence microscope we can further visualize the formation of the tubes [DNA nanotubes] at each stage of assembly, ... single-molecule microscopy ... enables scientists to peer into the nano-world by turning the fluorescence of individual molecules on and off.

CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Chemistry
  • Printed Circuits and Microelectronics
DEF

The adsorption layer of a surface active agent in which all adsorbed molecules are in contact with the surface layer of the adsorbent.

OBS

monomolecular layer; monolayer: terms and definition standardized by ISO.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Chimie
  • Circuits imprimés et micro-électronique
DEF

DEF

A reaction involving a single molecule.

OBS

Examples of monomolecular reaction are decomposition, intramolecular rearrangement, intramolecular oxidation or reduction.

OBS

Even if a catalytic agent, such as acid or alkali, is present in large excess, on a molecular basis, or is not rate-determining.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Chimie
DEF

Record 5 2004-02-04

English

Subject field(s)
  • Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics (Physics)
  • Meteorology
DEF

Layer of a substance with a depth of 1 molecule usually on a surface between water and air.

CONT

... a Division in Melbourne ... suggested that the use of monomolecular films on water surfaces could reduce evaporation. ... While Mansfield's research was directed at reducing evaporation on small storages such as farm dams SMHEA [Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Authority] decided to conduct an experiment on Lake Eucumbene.

OBS

Such a layer reduces evaporation and can therefore conserve water in a reservoir.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Mécanique des fluides et hydraulique (Physique)
  • Météorologie
DEF

OBS

There are two major limitations for the transferred monolayer systems: (1) Thermodynamic instability renders them suffering from lack of long-term durability; (2) the transferring methods require the supporting substrates to be planar, which will not provide large enough surface area for many important applications, such as enzymatic catalysis. Thus, direct graft of phospholipids to solid substrate to form a highly packed monolayer holds great promise in biomembrane mimetic applications. A method, first reported by Pidgeon and Venkataram to bond covalently phospholipids on a silica gel surface for chromatography applications, has greatly inspired our interest in further developing a stable and robust self-assembled lipid monolayer on solid surfaces to mimic the functionality of biomembranes, especially the surface activation of membrane-bound enzymes by the lipid self-assembled monolayers.
