limited generations ... places a maximum (commonly 3-5) on the number of generations permitted to intervene between basic seed and the seed sold to farmers. Nomenclatures vary somewhat. The OECD scheme recognizes: Pre-basic, Basic (produced under the supervision of the breeder) and Certified generation 1,2,3,... n. AOSCA in the USA recognizes: Breeder's, Foundation, Registered, Certified; while Canada interjects a Select stage between the first two. If the uncertified product is permitted it would probably be called Commercial.

Les deux agences principales favorisent maintenant un nombre limité de générations de multiplication; en pratique, un maximum de trois à cinq générations entre la semence du sélectionneur et celle qui est vendue au producteur ... le schéma de l'OCDE reconnaît les semences pre-basic, basic (produites sous la surveillance du sélectionneur) et certifiée de générations 1,2,3,...n. Aux États-Unis, les catégories sont: sélectionneur, fondation, enregistrée et certifiée. Au Canada, on ajoute la catégorie sélect entre les deux premières catégories. Le nom semence commerciale est réservé au produit non certifié.
