Le système numérique Fréon n'est plus l'exclusivité de Dupont; autant les autres fabricants de produits chimiques que le monde scientifique utilisent la nomenclature Fréon. C'est pourquoi le terme Fréon, ou même fréon, est devenu dans la pratique, quoique à tort, un synonyme d'hydrocarbure halogéné. Les fréons sont surtout utilisés comme propulseurs d'aérosol.

Dans ce système, le produit est identifié par trois chiffres (de deux parfois car le zéro est facultatif). Le premier chiffre représente le nombre d'atomes de carbone moins 1 (les cholorofluorométhanes n'auront donc que deux chiffres). Le second représente le nombre d'atomes d'hydrogène plus 1 (ce qui permet de déterminer le degré d'halogénation). Le troisième chiffre représente le nombre d'atomes de fluor (ce qui permet de déduire le nombre d'atomes de chlore). Ainsi le trichlorotrifluoroéthane, CC1F2CC12F, prend l'appellation Fréon 113.

En anglais, le terme qui précède le numéro d'identification varie selon les auteurs; Fréon 113, fréon 113, F-113, F 113, fluorocarbon-113, propellant 113, réfrigérant 113, R 113, chlorofluorocarbon 113, FCF 113, FC 113 sont toutes des appellations équivalentes pour désigner le trichlorotrifluoroéthane. En français, on retrouve surtout, pour le même produit, Fréon 113, fréon 113, F 113, F-113, R 113 et, plus récemment, CFC 113 (pour chlorofluorocarbure 113). Le numéro peut aussi être précédé d'une autre marque déposée que celle de Dupont : Ucon 113, d'Union Carbide Corp., par exemple.

The International Code of Zoological Nomenclature is a set of rules in zoology that have one fundamental aim: to provide the maximum universality and continuity in classifying all animals according to taxonomic judgment. The Code is meant to guide the nomenclature of animals, while leaving the zoologists some degree of freedom in naming and classifying new species. The rules in the Code determine what names are potentially valid for any taxon including the ranks of subspecies and superfamily. Its provisions can be waived or modified in their application to a particular case when strict adherence would cause confusion. Such exceptions are not made by an individual scientist, no matter how well-respected within his or her field, but only by the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN), acting on behalf of all zoologists.

A classification of units of a statistical population according to the presence or absence of an attribute is called division by dichotomy, i.e. formation of two classes. If we deal with several attributes we may reclassify the members of such a class according as to whether they possess a second attribute or not, the members of each such a sub-class according as to whether they possess a third attribute, etc.; thus, by a series of divisions by dichotomy we can form any number of classes, i.e. produce a manifold classification.

A numerical system used to identify the many halogenated hydrocarbons produced commercially, in particular brominated extinguishants, without the need to refer to the systematic nomenclature or chemical formulas.

The Halon naming system should not be confused with the Freon commercial naming system.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers devised a system for numbering the Halon compounds, which is used worldwide. The first digit of each identifying number represents the number of carbon atoms in the molecule; the second digit, the number of fluorine atoms; the third, the number of chlorine atoms; the fourth, the number of bromine atoms; and the fifth, the number of iodine atoms. Terminal zeros are dropped. Any atoms unaccounted for are hydrogen.
