The North American Commission on Stratigraphic Nomenclature celebrated its 50th anniversary in December 1996. Originally named the American Commission on Stratigraphic Nomenclature, the Commission was later expanded to include representatives from the major geological organizations in Canada and Mexico with the goal of promoting uniformity in stratigraphic nomenclature throughout North America.
