ONDE GRAVITE [4 records]

Record 1 2011-02-04

English

Subject field(s)
  • Hydrology and Hydrography
DEF

A wave whose velocity of propagation is controlled primarily by gravity.

CONT

All waves of consequence on the ocean surface or interfaces are gravity waves, for the surface tension of the water becomes negligible at wavelengths of greater than a few centimeters.

CONT

Water waves more than 2 inches long are considered gravity waves. Waves longer then 1 inch and shorter than 2 inches are in an indeterminate zone between capillary and gravity waves.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Hydrologie et hydrographie
DEF

Record 2 2003-02-24

English

Subject field(s)
  • Oceanography
CONT

Although some globally-scattered seasonal morphologies of wave intensities exist, much remains to be done, e.g. the assessment of geographic location (mountainous, continental, coastal) upon wave activity; the development of global climatologies; relationships to weather disturbances in the lower atmosphere, which themselves have geographical/seasonal variations ...; the clarification of tidal-gravity wave coupling ...; and the assessment of gravity wave fluxes passing into the thermosphere.

  • Atmospheric Physics
DEF

Wave characterized by vertical displacements of stable air from the level of static equilibrium of this air.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Physique de l'atmosphère
DEF

Spanish

Campo(s) temático(s)

English

Subject field(s)
  • Meteorology
DEF

A gravity wave which is propagated through the atmosphere with the speed of sound.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Météorologie
DEF

Spanish

Campo(s) temático(s)
