Les radars trans-horizon à onde rampante utilisent des ondes très longues de fréquence allant de 2 à 20 MHz. Ces ondes électromagnétiques ont tendance à courber et à suivre les contours des obstacles à cause de la diffraction dans l'atmosphère. Cet effet est couplé avec la conduction électrique en passant au-dessus des océans pour donner des ondes de sol. Le tout permet au faisceau radar de littéralement suivre la courbure de la Terre.
