A linear-beam forward-wave in which a stream of electrons interacts in synchronism with a guided electromagnetic wave so that there is a net transfer of energy from the stream to the wave.

Un tube à ondes progressives (TOP) dont la fonction est d'amplifier des signaux de très hautes fréquences (12 GHz), comporte trois parties : d'abord le canon à électrons où les électrons sont émis par une cathode, focalisés par des électrodes (Wehnelt), l'anode permettant de régler le courant du faisceau d'électrons : ensuite la structure à retard est constituée d'une hélice en cuivre à pas variable, le long de laquelle se propage une onde électromagnétique. La vitesse (de phase) de cette onde est donc un peu moins rapide que celle du faisceau d'électrons qui se propage en ligne droite au milieu de l'hélice. Et le champ électrique de cette onde tend à freiner les électrons du faisceau qui cèdent alors de l'énergie à l'onde électromagnétique : il y a amplification. Le collecteur, enfin, est chargé de recueillir les électrons qui sortent de l'hélice et récupère une partie de leur énergie initiale puisqu'ils n'en ont cédé que 10 à 20 pour cent à l'onde RF (radiofréquence).

A crossed-field oscillator tube in which an electron stream interacts with a backward wave on the nonreentrant circuit.

Backward-wave oscillator: An amplifying device with a wide tuning range in which an electron gun sends a beam of electrons into a slow-wave structure. The electron beam and the electromagnetic wave move in opposite directions and the output power is extracted near the electron gun. Also called a carcinotron.

Tube waves are low-velocity, large-amplitude later events propagating along the interface between the borehole wall and the borehole fluid. They can be generated by the incident compressional wave energy from a surface source near the borehole, a source within the borehole, or a compressional wave in the surrounding solid passing any major discontinuity in the borehole.
