CONT

Ultra high frequency (UHF) is the ITU [International Telecommunication Union] designation for radio frequencies in the range between 300 MHz [Megahertz] and 3 GHz [Gigahertz], also known as the decimetre band as the wavelengths range from one to ten decimetres.

Key term(s)
  • decimeter band

  • Radiodiffusion
CONT

DEF

In the communication spectrum of frequencies or wavelengths, that portion which lies between 300 and 3000 megahertz (MHz) or between 1 and 10 decimetres (dm).

OBS

Designations are classed as follows - 1. ITU band designator: 9; 2. American designator and name: UHF - ultra high frequency; 3. Metric subdivision: decimetric waves.

OBS

In air mobile communications, UHF includes the frequency band from 235 MHz and above, which represents a significant overlap into the VHF band.

OBS

decimetric wave: term usually used in the plural.

OBS

ultra high frequency; UHF : term officially approved by the RDARASAT-2 Terminology Approval Group (RTAG).

OBS

ultrahigh frequency; UHF : term and abbreviation standardized by the Glossary for Pilots and Air Traffic Services Personnel Committee.

Key term(s)
  • decimetric waves

DEF

CONT

An external Ultra High Frequency (UHF) antenna ... will be attached to the station's U.S. laboratory Destiny ... The antenna, on a four-foot boom, is part of the UHF Communications Subsystem of the station. It will interact with systems already aboard the ISS [International Space Station], including the Space-to-Space Station Radio (SSSR) transceivers. A second antenna will be delivered on STS-115/11A next year. Once in operation the UHF subsystem will be used for space-to-space communication (voice, commands and telemetry for the space station). It can support up to five users on the same frequency and provides: Two-way voice communications between the station and space walkers, the station and orbiter and between the Mission Control Center in Houston and space walkers (using the UHF with the S-band subsystem).
