Il en est de très translucides dont la légèreté (environ 2 de densité) et l'indice de réfraction (1,43 à 1,45) empêchent seuls de les prendre pour des agates herborisées. Certaines de ces pierres, d'ailleurs, sont un mélange d'opale et de calcédoine. Ce fait se constate en lumière réfléchie : à la surface, des veines ou des taches plus brillantes et un peu en relief prouvent que le pouvoir réflecteur lié à l'indice de réfraction plus élevé, ainsi que la plus grande dureté, appartiennent à la calcédoine. Ces opales dendritiques forment parfois de tels dessins qu'elles évoquent des vues champêtres ou forestières.
