La pyrale du maïs est, à l'état adulte, un papillon de 25 mm d'envergure, qui pond des œufs en juillet à la face inférieure des feuilles; les jeunes chenilles attaquent les cornets, puis les jeunes panicules, provoquant fréquemment la rupture de celles-ci. Elles creusent ensuite des galeries dans les tiges, qui peuvent également se casser. Les épis atteints sont en outre souvent le siège de moisissures diverses (fusariose notamment).
