Les turbo-machines cycle à air exigent de tourner à très grande vitesse, de ce fait une turbo machine avec ces roulements à billes aurait une durée de vie limitée et des performances moindres. Ces paliers à air ont été conçus pour remplacer ces roulements à billes. Le principe de construction consiste à établir et à maintenir un film d'air entre l'arbre tournant et un support fixe abritant ce palier.
