A large genus of small, sooty brown to black butterflies, most of which have few distinct markings. As a result the various species that comprise this genus appear very similar. Common names of some of these species: common sooty wing, southern sooty wing, and mazans sooty wing.

«Hespérie», nom commun réservé à une des deux sous-familles de papillons (les Pyrginae et les Hesperiinae) comprend plusieurs genres, dont «Pholisora». Par contre toute hespérie ne constitue pas nécessairement un «sooty wing». Il y a des hespéries qui sont rendues en anglais par « dusky wings », d'autres par «cloudy wings», encore d'autres par «skippers». Il s'agit de 2 façons différentes de nommer la même réalité.
