Common locally on moist calcareous soil, by cold springs or seepages and on hummocks in wet meadows; mainly in mountain valleys and rarely ascending to timberline. The upper surface of its fleshy leaves is covered by minute, sticky glands that trap and digest small insects, thereby supplying the plant with nitrogen and other nutrients. Circumpolar, subarctic-alpine. 2, record 3, English, - butterwort

3, record 3, French, - grassette%20vulgaire

A different strategy is seen in plants with flypaperlike leaves, as in the species of Pinguicula, the butterworts, and Drosera, the sundews. In these genera glands on the leaf surface secrete adhesive droplets. The prey, usually a flying insect attracted by odor or color or perhaps by the brilliant refractions of the droplets, is trapped by the adhesive when it alights. 1, record 4, English, - butterwort

1, record 4, French, - grassette

The quantity of prey captured [by carnivorous plants] is sometimes quite large ... A butterwort such as Pinguicula grandiflora grows one new leaf about every five days, so that a total of 400 square centimeters of catching surface may be produced in a single season, even though the diameter of the leaf rosette never exceeds eight centimeters. 1, record 6, English, - Pinguicula%20grandiflora

1, record 6, French, - Pinguicula%20grandiflora
