A mechanical device that can be slid along a rope in only one direction and that is used to connect loads to ropes so that they can be advanced up the rope without their sliding back down.

Mechanical ascenders are used to ascend fixed ropes and are normally sold in pairs. Ascenders are also employed for rescue work and in hauling loads on multi-day walls. It should be noted that no manufacturer recommends their device for belaying or soloing (autobelaying solo leads).

Most ascending devices have some sort of cam that grips the rope. A safety latch or a similar security system permits attachment and prevents unanticipated removal during an ascent.

OBS

The original and most common type of mechanical ascender is the Jumar. Hence the word "jumar" is applied as a general term to many ascending devices by the average climber.

The fire protection system is separated into two categories: detection and extinguishing. Detection systems are installed in the engine; wheel well, APU [auxiliary power unit], and lavatory areas. Fire extinguishing capability is available for all engines, the APU, and the lavatories. ... The fire shutoff handles are located in the pilot's overhead panel. Upon activation of an engine fire detection systems a red warning light in the fire shutoff handle comes on, a master FIRE WARN light on the glareshield in front of each pilot comes on. and a bell sounds in the cockpit. The fire extinguishing equipment for an airliner such as the Douglas DC-10 incorporates three systems with six pressurized agent containers, two for each engine. The containers for the wing-mounted engines are located in pairs in the leading edge of the wing between the nacelle and the fuselage on each side of the aircraft. ... The discharge cartridge is an electrically fired explosive unit that provides force to rupture the disk seal in the outlet port of the container and release the extinguishing agent to the deployment lines. One discharge cartridge is installed on each wing-mounted container and two are installed on the aft-engine container. The discharge cartridge contains two squibs (explosive charges) that are fired by an electric circuit that heats the powder to the ignition point. When the fire extinguisher control handle is pulled down, the electric circuit is closed and the squibs are fired. The force of the explosion ruptures the disk seal, thus releasing the extinguishing agent. A screen in the discharge head prevents particles of the disk from entering the deployment line.
