An LP supercell is characterized by a very long anvil, a small core region, a wall cloud at the back, and a thin precipitation curtain that usually lets some light through. Tornadoes can occur, but the main severe threat is usually large hail.

LP storms often exhibit a striking visual appearance; the main tower often is bell-shaped, with a corkscrew appearance suggesting rotation. LP storms almost always occur on or near the dry line, and thus are sometimes referred to as dry line storms.

Si la température est négative on a affaire aux brouillards givrants. Les condensations par contact (appelées précipitations occultes) ont plus d'importance dans les pays secs, surtout sur les littoraux arides et semi-arides du Maroc, Chili, Pérou ou Israël où on compte entre 200 et 250 nuits de rosée procurant au sol de 100 à 150 mm d'eau.

Condensations occultes. Ces condensations sont fonction de l'humidité de l'air, du bilan énergétique et de l'état de la surface (hygroscopicité). The GPCC (Global Precipitation Climatology Centre) is a central element of the Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP) which was established by the WMO/ICSU [World Meteorological Organization/International Council of Scientific Unions] Joint Scientific Committee for the World Climate Research Programme [WCRP] at its Seventh Session (Lisbon, March 1986). The GPCC itself was established in August 1988 at the "Deutscher Wetterdienst" ("DWD", National Meteorological Service of Germany) starting with a research and development phase. The GPCC is now going to be operational, and it is operated by the DWD as a contribution to international climate observation and research activities. The GPCC has internationally defined functions. In the future, the GPCC will act as a GCOS [Global Climate Observing System] specified global data centre for precipitation, and in this role, it will continue to participate in the GPCP, as agreed by WCRP, GCOS, and DWD. It also co-operates with WCP-Water, Global Runoff Data Centre (GRDC), UNEP-GRID Programme, and FAO Water-Department.

The Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP) is an element of the Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment (GEWEX) of the World Climate Research Program (WCRP). It was established by the WCRP in 1986 with the initial goal of providing monthly mean precipitation data on a 2.5 x 2.5 degree latitude-longitude grid for the period 1986-1995. This was recently extended to the year 2000. The GPCP will accomplish this by merging infrared and microwave satellite estimates of precipitation with rain gauge data from more than 30,000 stations.
