The term reinforcing is used basically to mean tension or membrane reinforcing, that is, the ability to distribute a concentrated load over a larger area of the subgrade, thus avoiding local overloading of the bearing capacity. A closer analysis of the reinforcing function of a geotextile laid between the base course and the subgrade, reveals that in addition to membrane reinforcing there is a second phenomenon which improves the load bearing capacity of the structure by providing horizontal reinforcing or lateral restraint. Because of this the geotextile works against horizontal deformation where it is in contact with the base and subgrade. 1, record 1, English, - reinforcing%20function

3, record 1, French, - fonction%20renforcement
