The three elementary movements of a gyroscope... 1. Rotation--the top is spinning rapidly about its vertical axis. 2. Precession--as it slows down, the top cants over and its axis follows a conical path. 3. Nutation--as the top spins more slowly still, the axis oscillates in a sinusoidal path.

Démonstration d'auditoire : un gyroscope à bille sur coussin d'air permet de bien mettre en évidence le mouvement de nutation et de précession. C'est le mouvement de rotation d'un gyroscope qui augmente la résistance de l'appareil à changer son axe de rotation. Tout corps en mouvement tend toujours à se déplacer en ligne droite. En somme, la masse en mouvement du volant d'un gyroscope devient de plus en plus inerte (résistance) à mesure que sa vitesse augmente. La rotation du gyroscope augmente sa masse.
