Researchers at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory, a facility operated for the U.S. Department of Energy, are developing novel techniques for synthesis and processing of advanced materials for energy, aerospace, and defense applications. One technique under investigation is referred to as combustion synthesis, reaction synthesis, or self-propagating high temperature synthesis. In this processing approach, powders are mixed together, so when heated they will undergo a spontaneous exothermic reaction to produce the desired compound. Advantages of the process include the use of inexpensive starting materials, less energy consumption because of lower processing temperatures and shorter processing times, and the ability to produce materials with unique microstructures and properties. 1, record 1, English, - self%2Dpropagating%20high%2Dtemperature%20synthesis

5, record 1, French, - synth%C3%A8se%20autopropag%C3%A9e%20%C3%A0%20haute%20temp%C3%A9rature
