The coherent system of units adopted and recommended by the General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM). [Definition approved by ISO, the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM), the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML), and others.]

The Sl is based at present on the following seven base units: metre, kilogram, second, ampere, kelvin, mole, candela.

La 1re Conférence générale des poids et mesures, en 1889, adopta les nouveaux étalons du mètre et du kilogramme [...] pour servir de base internationale du système métrique. Depuis, ce système s'est étendu et perfectionné. La 11e Conférence générale des poids et mesures, en 1960, lui a donné le nom de «système international d'unités» ou, en abrégé, SI, dans toutes les langues. Le SI comporte aujourd'hui sept unités de base : mètre, kilogramme, seconde, ampère, kelvin, candela et mole, à partir desquelles on forme les unités dérivées par des relations simples.
