Over time, Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day moved away from its religious beginnings. C'est le 11 mai 1977, que, par un arrêté ministériel du gouvernement de René Lévesque, le 24 juin devient officiellement le jour de la Fête nationale du Québec. L'année suivante, le comité organisateur de la Fête nationale du Québec est créé. Le comité confia d'abord l'organisation des événements à la Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste. En 1984, l'organisation est confiée au Mouvement national des Québécoises et des Québécois. La Saint-Jean devient donc la fête de tous les Québécois et non plus uniquement celle des Québécois d'origine canadienne-française. Par les actions de la Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste et du Mouvement national des Québécois principalement, la fête est graduellement laïcisée et les célébrations des 23 et 24 juin deviennent ce qu'elles sont aujourd'hui. La tradition d'allumer des feux durant la nuit est toujours vivante. De nos jours, la fête est l'occasion d'un grand festival culturel dont les Québécois profitent pour manifester leur existence au monde. La Fête nationale du Québec est la fête officielle du Québec. Pour l'Église catholique romaine, le 24 juin est un jour de fête religieuse en l'honneur de Saint-Jean-Baptiste. La Fédération des sociétés Saint-Jean-Baptiste de l'Ontario (FSSJBO) est fondée à Ottawa le 26 mars 1939. Elle obtient son incorporation en 1955.
